LAS MEDULAS
Las Médulas is a
historical site near the town of Ponferrada in the region of El Bierzo
(province of León, Castile and León, Spain)Las Médulas Cultural Landscape is
listed by the UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites.The spectacular
landscape of Las Médulas resulted from the Ruina Montium, a Roman mining
technique described by Pliny the Elder in 77 AD. The technique employed
was a type of hydraulic mining.At least seven long aqueducts tapped the streams
of the La Cabrera district at a range of altitudes. The same aqueducts
were used to wash the extensive gold deposits.The area Hispania Tarraconensis
had been invaded in 25 BC by the emperor Augustus.
Pyrénées
National Park
- The Pyrénées National Park
(French: Parc National des Pyrénées) is a national park located within the
Frenchdépartements of Hautes-Pyrénées and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
- Located along the border of
France and Spain is a scenic and mountainous landscape offering a variety
of outdoor activities including hiking, skiing, mountain climbing and
observing wildlife.
- According to the Pyrénées
National Park website, the park, created in 1967, is a natural heritage
without barriers or fences where animals are totally free.
- Devoted to preserving
biodiversity and landscapes, studying wildlife and plant species, the park
is home to 70 different species of animals. The eastern portion of the
national park forms part of the French section of the Pyrénées – Mont
Perdu World Heritage Site that straddles the border between France and
Spain.
Tower of Hercules
The Tower of Hercules
(Galician and Spanish: Torre de Hércules) is an ancient Roman lighthouse on a
peninsula about 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) from the centre of A Coruña,
Galicia, in north-western Spain.
Until the 20th
century, the tower itself was known as the “Farum Brigantium”. The Latin
word farum is derived from the Greek pharos for the Lighthouse of
Alexandria. The structure is 55 metres (180 ft) tall and overlooks the
North Atlantic coast of Spain. The structure, almost 1900 years old and
rehabilitated in 1791, is the oldest Roman lighthouse in use today. There
is a sculpture garden featuring works by Pablo Serrano and Francisco
Leiro.The Tower of Hercules is a National Monument of Spain, and since
June 27, 2009, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the second
tallest lighthouse in Spain, after the Faro de Chipiona.
Cathedral–Mosque of Córdoba
- The Cathedral
and former Great Mosque of Córdoba, in ecclesiastical terms the Catedral
de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (English: Cathedral of Our Lady of the
Assumption), and known by the inhabitants of Córdoba as
theMezquita-Catedral (English: Mosque–Cathedral), is today a World
Heritage Site and the cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba.
- The building was
begun around the year 600 as the Christian Visigothic church of St.
Vincent.
- It is located in
the Andalusian city of Córdoba, Spain.
- The Mezquita is
regarded as perhaps the most accomplished monument of the Umayyad
Caliphate of Córdoba.
Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
- The Guggenheim
Museum Bilbao is a museum of modern and contemporary art designed by
Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, built by Ferrovial and located in
Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain.
- It is built
alongside the Nervion River, which runs through the city of Bilbao to the
Atlantic Coast.
- The Guggenheim
is one of several museums belonging to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.
- The museum
features permanent and visiting exhibits of works by Spanish and
international artists.
- The museum was
the building most frequently named as one of the most important works
completed since 1980 in the 2010 World Architecture Survey among
architecture experts.
- The curves on
the building were to appear random.
- There is a
tramway stop called Guggenheim 100 meters away from the museum. Line 18 of
the bus system also has a nearby stop. The museum is located 500 meters
north of Moyua station on the Bilbao Metro.
